Office Tip: Differentiate Male and Female Names Via Image Search

“If you are dealing with an international contact but don’t know if they are a man or a woman, try typing their first name into a image search engine like images.google.com (e.g., “Priti“). Watch out for unisex names, though.”

This is one of those tips which are very simple, pretty damn obvious, but yet never crossed my mind.

I deal with people from other countries all the time, but have never been good with names - To test this, I used Vietnamese and Thai names, which had always given me most trouble. Works beautifully.

      Very risky, though. See what happens with Andrea when you add the family name: Andrea+Pirlo.

      Years ago, I was contacted by a sri-lankan named Shanake. For months, I never knew whether I had to say “he” or “she”…

      Then I met HIM.

      I just tried a google image search for “shanake” and, needless to say, it didn’t work…

      Lugalle: Must have been one of those Unisex names. Image searches did tend to suggest it was predominantly female.
