Turning B&W Photos Into Color with Recolored

August 31st 2006 in Web 2.0 by James Yeang Please leave a comment...

recoloredRecolored is an image editing program which breathes new life to B&W photos by turning them into color photos.

Yes, part of the magic may be lost once color is introduced to a classic B&W photo, but it does allow you to look at old pictures in different ways never before possible. Try to edit for example, an old photo of your grandparents — it makes a great gift to family members.

Recolored’s results are breathtaking, (check out the examples) but best of all, it is quick.
There is no intense graphic editing required, and all the pictures below took me around 15 minutes each to do. (Recoloring B&W photos can be strangely addictive).

It is however, not free (It used to be), but there is a free trial version available for download.

By the way, today my country celebrates it’s 49th year of independence.
As a mini-project, I have added colour to old B&W photos of our first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. Happy Merdeka Day to All Malaysians…

Reclaim Your Internet Identity with ClaimID

August 29th 2006 in Web 2.0 by James Yeang Please leave a comment... (1)

Nothing you say online is really secret anymore. The problem now is controlling what people read about you, and how they form a judgement based on your online presence.

Controlling what entries come out tops on Google when you search you name can be tough. It may be a kiddy website you did when you were younger. It may be a comment on an article, which is read out of context. It may be a rant you did on your blog which seemed like a good idea at the time. Even if you don’t talk about yourself, someone else may write about you.

ClaimID tries to focus your online presence by giving people an online voice to tell the world who they are, rather than relying on pure search results, and getting judged based on that…which is useful in a day and age where even employers search online about potential candidates before taking them on.

My experience with it was that it was a quick and painless registration. After a week, a search for my name had my claim ID site at #6 in Google. Not too bad considering i never linked it to them before writing this. (I did not want incoming links from my site affecting the search results in Google before this test)

Bonus Tip: When you sign up, use your real name (not your internet handle) as your login name because your ClaimID page will reflect that. Remember — you WANT people to find this page when they search for your name.

21 Days Left To Immortalize Yourself in Firefox 2.0

August 26th 2006 in Firefox, Happenings by James Yeang Please leave a comment... (1)

World Firefox Day was launched on in the middle of last month, in conjunction with it’s birthday. If you convert someone over to this fantastic browser, you and your friend’s names will be placed, and immortalized on the ‘Firefox Friends Wall’, which will be part of Firefox 2.0.

This offer is only open until 15th September, so get cracking!

If you need help convincing the your friends to switch browsers, here are a few resources to start with:

  1. Tell them what they can do with Firefox in One Click Challenge
  2. Let them see the awards and testimonials
  3. Video tutorials are on standby to help newbies

Bonus Link: There are of course 10 good reasons to keep using IE… like this one:

“Internet Explorer gives website creators the ability to open popup windows. Mozilla and Firefox have a popup blocker. It would be a pain not to use 100% of your bandwidth (it’s so expensive…) not seing all those colorful ads, chosen and sorted by the one who created the website you visit.”

Classic :)
