World News Gets A Redesign with NewsMap

So little time, so much news…
How do we sift through the information to decide what is important?
By looking at the front page of your favourite news site?
What if you subscribe to multiple news feeds?

Well, much like the 10×10 news project discussed sometime back, visualization is key here, and newsmap arranges itself in a treemap resizing the space allocated to each story based on the amount of coverage it is getting in Google News. This way you get an aggregated look at world news all with a single glance.

“Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. Its objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news; on the contrary, it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.”

My semi-random thoughts…

The thing I like about it is that it’s not US centric, and includes options to add European and Asian nations into the mix as well. I do however wish someone would come up with a similar treemap setup where I could choose a selection of sites so I could completely customize my visualizations e.g. Treemaps of gadget news, Web 2.0 news, Firefox news etc.
