Free Outlook GTD Plugin

For those unfamiliar with this system, GTD is basically a time and commitment management system, and this definition from Wikipedia truly encapsulates the concept perfectly…

“GTD rests on the principle that a person needs to move tasks out of their mind and get them recorded somewhere. That way, the mind is freed from the job of remembering everything that needs to be done, and can concentrate fully on actually performing those tasks. “

…and yes - speaking from experience, it really works. Jello GTD is a brand new open source plugin which helps you implement this system in Outlook

What’s good?

  • It’s free, open source and under constant development
  • It’s developer ‘Dr. Uqbarrun’ is quick and responsive to comments and suggestions in the comments sections, which has lead to quick implementation of features.
  • Syncs with your handhelds

What’s not?

Having tried it out, it seems that there is no obvious way to associate email to the tasks created. As a lot of of my work is driven by emails that need to be actioned, this is a big drawback.

Conclusion:

If your work is not heavily email based, and you’d like a better way to keep track of your tasks, it’s certainly worth a try… after all it’s free. If anything this program will help whip a scattered workflow back into shape. It’s better than ending up like this…

Streamyx Down Nationwide

Tmnet

If you’re wondering why our beloved Malaysian monopolistic consumer broadband provider Streamyx has been crawling along at night, here’s why…

“Wednesday, September 06, 2006, SERVICE INTERRUPTION

TM Net is performing an upgrading exercise to the Streamyx system nationwide from 5th – 19th September 2006 daily from 12:00 a.m. till 6:00 a.m. As a result, tmnet streamyx customers may experience disconnection and slow browsing during the stipulated time period.”

Two weeks of downtime, and I’m not holding my breath that this ‘upgrade’ will result in better service.

World News Gets A Redesign with NewsMap

September 6th 2006 in Web 2.0 by James Yeang Please leave a comment...

newsmap
So little time, so much news…
How do we sift through the information to decide what is important?
By looking at the front page of your favourite news site?
What if you subscribe to multiple news feeds?

Well, much like the 10×10 news project discussed sometime back, visualization is key here, and newsmap arranges itself in a treemap resizing the space allocated to each story based on the amount of coverage it is getting in Google News. This way you get an aggregated look at world news all with a single glance.

“Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. Its objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news; on the contrary, it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.”

My semi-random thoughts…

The thing I like about it is that it’s not US centric, and includes options to add European and Asian nations into the mix as well. I do however wish someone would come up with a similar treemap setup where I could choose a selection of sites so I could completely customize my visualizations e.g. Treemaps of gadget news, Web 2.0 news, Firefox news etc.
