Am I missing something here?

“Google for Celcom users : CELCOM Malaysia Bhd customers will now be able to access the Google search engine through Celcom’s WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) service. The telecommunications company signed a memorandum of understanding with the popular web search giant to make the service available to Celcom customers. Celcom chief executive officer Datuk Shazalli Ramly said the partnership will offer customers WAP and web search capabilities starting this month. Celcom will roll out other Google services such as Google Mail (Gmail) and the web version of Google Search within five months. ”

Sounds cool?
But everyone has already been doing this for ages!

In fact, here’s what it looks like from my phone… So what fantastic ‘new’ technology are we talking about here?

To make things worse, the article says…

“When accessed through Celcom’s portal, the Google searches will give top priority to Celcom’s offerings, followed by other results. “

Just what we need. Biased search results. Thanks but no thanks, Celcom…

To use Google Search on your phone: Just go to Google on your phone browser, or if your phone can support it, download the free opera phone browser which has Google built in.

To setup gmail on your mobile phone: Just point your mobile browser to http://m.gmail.com

To setup Google Calendar SMS reminders:

  1. Log in to Google Calendar, then go to Settings -> Notifications, enter your phone number and choose your carrier.
  2. You can then send yourself a verification code which will arrive promptly; enter it in the verification code box to finish the setup.
  3. Now also make sure to tick the “Event reminders - SMS” box and that you enable the right timing for events (e.g. 2 hours before the event, or a day before it…).

Interview with the CEO of Cynapse

A truly seamless collaboration work platform has been a holy grail of sorts for many firms, especially global ones which work in decentralised teams. One of the largest issues that face corporations today is the over-reliance of email as an end-all communication tool within the company, which just doesn’t work very well in distributed groups.

cyn.in (pronounced “Sign-in”) is an Internet based service from Cynapse that allows teams, companies or communities to manage, organize, store, version, search through, collaborate & discuss upon, share and publish any kind of information or data.

I managed to catch up with Apurva Roy Choudhury, CEO of Cynapse, and among other things in this interview, we cover business models, and competition - Two increasingly important topics, especially in the wake of Web 2.0 companies starting to go out of business, heralding the dawn of a new Internet bubble.
