The Best Way to Watch TV Online - Get a FREE Joost Invite

joost

What is Joost?

Video on the Net? Surely this is nothing revolutionary - Or is there more than meets the eye with Joost?

Designed by the same geniuses who brought you Skype and Kazaa, Joost is a new way of watching TV on the Internet. With Joost, you get all the things you love about TV, including a high-quality full-screen picture, hundreds of full-length shows and easy channel-flipping.

Other features include search, chat and instant messaging, built right into the program - so you find shows quickly and talk to your friends while you watch. And with no schedules to worry about, you can watch whatever you want, whenever you like - as often as you want.

On the surface, it might seem like another YouTube, but once you start playing around with it - you’ll find it’s so much more. The two main things that sets it apart would be the high quality of shows, and blazing fast streams with P2P technology. All for FREE of course!

joost

I was very impressed with the way it could cope with my horribly slow Internet connection. YouTube’s stream is usually choppy my machine. Joost - in contrast, streams flawlessly, and with arguably better video resolution to as well!

It even comes with interactive widgets and chat platforms. This platform is so attractive - even major networks like CBS have agreed to start offering its content (CSI, Survivor) on Joost when launches this year.

joost

Make no mistake - Internet TV has arrived and its name is Joost.

Choppy and blurry, and frankly not worth anything yet is what I think when I think Internet TV. Like at Youtube - Yeah it’s fun, and if you’re lucky a few of your favorite shows are uploaded on there, but more often than not the link doesn’t work, or it stops streaming a minute into the video. Then I spend upwards of half an hour loading and reloading the whole thing until I get a good connection going. All that for a five-minute video, too; talk about inefficient. And worst of all, the resolution is so low that I feel like I’m viewing the world through my granny’s bifocal glasses. That’s why I can’t wait to try out Joost - the screenshots look oh-so-divinely-beautiful, the images crisp and sharp. If THIS is the future of Internet TV, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to leave my computer again, save for the occasional bathroom break and sandwich.

Cris - you’ll be blown away - Even with my crappy net connection, the streams start almost right away, and didn’t stop halfway thru at any point.

ok, i just read how to enter!

      well…
i think it’s great to be able to have a tv in your computer(at least for me since i work 24/7) and you can save a lot of extra fees.
anyway i’m all interesting in exploring new things/Technology.

    6. Mike said,

      on April 28th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

      I would like to enter.

Internet TV is becoming something of the future. The invention of Youtube and Google Video really jumpstarted something that I think will expand enough that it will become more popular than regular TV. The new generation is an internet generation and naturally, they want entertainment.

The introduction of Internet TV is not a great leap forward in terms of technology. It’s just television streamed over a fast internet connection and according to some sources the content will not be identical to the programs available via normal broadcast or cable tv. Copyright issues and the protection of PayTV revenues will hamper access to full blown programming and as such I don’t think Internet TV will replace normal TV as the dominant distribution medium for a while to come.

What Internet TV does very well is interactivity,
and I can see endless applications for this sort of programming - online interactive quiz shows, crime shows with multiple endings chosen by the viewer, telecasts of sporting events with user controlled camera views etc.

Anyway, I’d like to see what the fuss is all about so a Joost invite would be awesome. Cheers!

      The buzz is really on!

      - Joost is, like KaZaa and Skype were, going to make a revolution in users’ habits. Connected People already don’t use their TV anymore. Why should their culture stay underground?

Whatever the case - if it goes live, that’s awesome for everyone - if it does not - then readers here will still get an invite - You lose nothing by entering the contest!

The marketers of Joost are brilliant! I have been reading different posts about invites, and the demand and buzz that they have created is ridiculous. Please make me part of this insanity. Thanks.

Hi Friedbeef, nice blog. I usually use sopcast and tvants to see the nba and the spanish league, because I am living in uk now but I am spanish. This p2p programs are allright but not really smooth sometimes, and stop from time to time to buffer. I would like to try joost and give you my opinion, if is going to be the revolution of the tv as it is said in the web. So please send me an invitation if somebody has a spare one. Thanks so much in advance. Take care people. jandrofernandez@gmail.com

Internet TV is the best way to make people fat. YouTube, though with its low quality, manages to do that already. CruncyRoll also manages to do so. Joost, with its expected high quality, will make the average weight of humans go up more.

I feel strongly that internet TV will kill mass media. User created content on Youtube gets tested for quality by the massive amount of viewers weeding through all the videos. What happens is you have a social self-governing population of artists, which will eventually replace all of the network television. Joost allows for super high quality video, like that of traditional television, by sharing the bandwidth costs among users. This will be awesome.

    22. DieNasty said,

I have been a friend of “shared content” for a long time, also participating in distributed computing projects and all that goodness :P

Naturally this sparks my interest, especially considering that i don’t have a real TV here (never in the mood to watch when i have time, not the time when i am in the mood, and/or no time when there is actually something good to watch). So currently i kinda run a software TiVo thing on my PC but with all the commercial breaks and everything it’s not as much fun as i hoped it would be. Maybe Joost is the answer? I hope to find out soon *wink*

Internet TV is definitely the direction content providers should be heading to. We can already watch HD shows for free on ABC.com. It’s hard to make advertising revenue off of the internet when providing access to shows for free, but I’m sure these media bigwigs can figure it out. They had to move from radio to TV. Now they have to make the transition from TV to the Internet.

Love internet TV it is not customizeable I mean it is too rigid you can’t watch it on your tv or share it. It is stuck to one source. Joost allows you to share legally all your shows with out the headache of current ” Notice of Claim of Copyright Infringement.” I mean WHAT IS WRONG WITH SHARING SHOWS YOU LOVE AND YOU PAY FOR TV ANYWAYS. I think it the entertainment industry is too prehistoric in its thinking about current REALITY and FUTURE use of peer-to-peer potential and great grail of bandwith anti-hog properties

PLEASE INVITE ME AND SHOW ME THERE IS HOPE!!!

Internet TV is the wave of the future. With more people having DVRs and trying to watch their shows on their time it will come shortly to a head with however can capitalize on the Internet TV. Slingbox, Joost, or someone new.

With that said, I would love to try out Joost.

    30. zephyrbilly said,

What do I think of Internet TV? Same as I feel about ‘military intelligence’ - it’s an oxymoron, pretty much.

I mean, if you visit the networks’ sites themselves - ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox - you wouldn’t know that they were all in the same business. ABC probably does the best job, although they, too, fall into the steady-by-jerks streaming quality once in a while.

Content? Schmontent. When Charlie Rose is a buck 99 per episode and half of the shows put out by the major networks aren’t even archived for the web, the user experience is basically one of baited-and-switched.

Why would I like a Joost invite? Mostly, because I am near to pushing the envelope on wasting time and I really think having Joost would put me over the top.

Dude, can you hook me up with an invite?

    31. Sal said,

Hey there, thought I would join the fray for a Joost invite. The idea of Internet TV or IPTV is great especially for niche content that cannot find distribution on any of the big networks. For a very long time I could not find the type of content I was looking for (Mixed Martial Arts or Ultimate Fighting) on TV so I would need to search shady video stores, fleamarkets, ebay, etc. to find outdated events to watch on DVD or even VHS. When Tivo first came out I jumped on board right away. Delivering content over the net would be even better than just a DVR. I’ve also looked at verismonetworks’ offering, but it does not seem as mature. One of the reasons I am looking for an invite is because I see that Joost has added the Canadian based Fight Network to their list of channels/partners. I’ll subscribe to the email newsletter in hopes of obtaining an invite!

      Sal.

I want to create programming for TV and internet TV has the potential to open everything up wide for anyone to manage and create not only their own show but their own network or programming.

Its amazing the potential that is there, but that so easily could be taken away by corporations if we don’t stay vigilant.

I have been downloading/streaming movies (legally) for quite a while and I have to say I prefer to do that to go to my local video store, however the lack of on demand TV shows/services is very disappointing to me. since I have 24 meg connection i don’t really have a bandwidth issue. I have tried other so called on demand tv services prior to joost and would like to compare them as I have not been trully satisfied with the services so far!

I think Joost is heading in the right direction and can be that step for the internet community to truelly be able to enjoy the freedom as they should.

Oh by the way PLEASE send me a joost invite ;)

I personally think internet TV is the future, not in the way it is done now, but like VoIP we do get TVoIP in a while.

In the end we can do everything that has to do with communication either static or interactive by the same account. But for now Joost is way ahaed of the other competitors (imho).
      Thanks in advance!

You just can’t beat good old off-air TV (at least in the USA). In the evenings I get great Hi-def content TOTALLY FOR FREE. That said, I also believe that a large portion of the population will use internet TV instead of cable or satellite. It just makes sense, I already pay an ISP for web access. Why also pay for cable or satellite? In fact, I recently cut off my cable subscription and got a faster internet connection. Joost should be great. Thx,
      Brian

I think Internet TV is the wave of the future in terms of delivering content to the viewer. I’m impressed by the forays into the market made by the major networks, but the quality still leaves alot to be desired (grainy picture, choppy streams, small sized video, content restrictions). However, from what I’ve read about Joost, the quality is superb; definitely beyond my wildest expectations. I’m looking forward to testing out Joost and reading your e-mail newsletter I signed up for!!

      Thanks so much,
      Martin

I love the idea of being able to get internet TV at my computer while I study. Odd as it may seem, with a slight distraction such as the TV on I seem to get more done. (probably because I am less likely to surf) Also I like the idea of being able to get on demand tv without having to pay for the tivo thing and other related hardware

      Thanks for sharing Joost.

I love using YouTube to post family videos for my sister to watch. However, Internet TV is still too disconnected from the television. The Apple TV and all next-gen video game consoles are attempting to shrink that separation by bringing a “web-presence” to your television. But Internet TV will really explode when you can sit on your couch, pick up a remote, and just turn it on. That’s where the “computer as televised entertainment” currently falls short.

I’m subscribing to your RSS feed, and look forward to a Joost invitation at your earliest convenience.

      Thanks,

      J Rob

I was a video major in college and spent all of my time in the early 90’s talking about how Internet video was the way of the future. Yeah, lots of eye rolls and laughs. I really didn’t ever use it until recently (I avoided it to some extent knowling darn well I’d waste days looking at cool things) but I really, really love being able to travel and not having to wait to come home to watch my fave shows. I can see creating TV fave lists like a PVR that would allow you to sync and download subscribed shows to your PMP; the show-as-a-sales-tool model where furnishings, clothes, etc. are all clickable and purchaseable… but those were things I was saying five years ago and getting laughed at. You’ll have to ask me what I’m getting laughed at about these days :)

The whole concept of the way we use the Internet is rapidly changing. Joos t seems to be taking the next big step in providing high quality video/tv to anyone with an internet connection and enough bandwidth. It is very interesting to follow these sort of developments, especially if you still remember the time when just trying to load a page of text was tedious and modems sounded like R2D2 having a fit. I look forward to actually seeing Joost working, and hope to have an invitation soon.

IP tv surely is the future. Although whether it realy is there yet or not is another matter. But, that’s why you have beta releases for things like Joost. Just imagine a couple of years ago this would have sounded like fantasy - so in another couple of years no reason to belive the quality won’t be good enough to be a spring board for mainstream. In the mean time I for one am looking forward to my joost invite! :)

      Internet tv,

If we could describe Internet TV, this is how I would describe it.

      Easy
      Choice
      Your schedule
      What you like
      Interaction
Individualism ( we use to watch tv with family members)

Actuallly it will force the other TV to reconsider how it’s distributed. It will bring upon the market bing changes.

      Thanks

I love the advances in technology that allow me to streamline that. Right now, I currently use a Slingbox to stream my digital cable to my home computer, or wherever I am. In response to the above, the ad-based stuff drives me crazy too especially in streaming video (like the major news websites)… it seems likely that they’d offer a paid service (monthly fee) to remove the ads, but I haven’t seen any of my favorite news video sites do that yet. =/

I have been very dissapointed with how the entertainment industry has been treating the internet. Instead of a revolutionary new distribution medium for lowering prices and getting new content out faster, they have taken the opposite approach and protected their monopoly with lawsuits. I think it takes efforts from the internet community to show these conglomerates how we want the future of the internet to be. Let’s be part of that revolution (and please send me an invite!). Thanks!

I believe that Internet tv is the future of TV. I think that the people suing Youtube and others should just sign agreements with youtube and others to show there shows with commercials and all on youtube and such. Because they are still making as much as they would and also they dont have to pay to be on the cable or satalite television stations.

Internet TV is only possible in countries that have unlimited bandwidth. Unfortunately for me, I’m currently in Russia where bandwidth is at a premium and it will be several years before anywhere outside of moscow even learns of internet TV.

In theory its excellent, but it could turn the interactive internet experience into a passive boob-tube trance that we are trying so hard to avoid.

      Its a double edged sword.

I think global internet TV is the last chance for the networks to save revenue from TV-series, since we who don’t live in US download tv-series with commercials stripped. Just because we can’t see them otherwise.

      Added you at DIGG!

The issue with software and technology is that companies are still not understanding open source. The only way to move technology forward and innovate at the largest pace is to provide access to the source or at least the APIs. IPTV software needs to be open to provide the best service to the digital world.
I would appreciate a Joost invite.
      Thanks in advance,

I truly believe that Internet TV, especially an on-demand system like Joost is the future of streaming media. The only thing that I see that could possibly eclipse a system like Joost (unless they adapt as well) would be the creation of a streaming service that offers HD quality content. Granted, this will be very bandwidth intensive, but would be well worth it.

In a recent tv-news announcement about Joost it was doubted that it would be a succes because of the lower quality vs high definition. Personally I often find myself scanning the 30 or so “normal” tv channels we can receive for something interesting to watch. In conclusion, I think I will love Joost, providing some interesting content will be available.

I’m a big fan of watching webisodes though, stuff like the videos on Bravos website. Am very keen to see if joosts video quality is what I’ve heard it is. One other thing, if the mini mac was to come with a bigger hard drive, watching TV from your computer would be a much more viable option! Anyway thats my 10p. Bring on the Joost!

To be perfectly honest, one of the only reasons I’m interested in Internet TV is due to the fact that I work 7 days a week, and have very little free time to watch some of my favorite shows. The Video On Demand feature that certain networks have been doing lately have helped, but it would be much more helpful to have a greater selection, with more networks participating.

      Hello there,
I’m also very interested in internet TV because I don’t want to spend money on a TV or TV card. Another advantage for me is to receive broadcast from foreign countries, which I would like very much. I’ve found the rise of video sharing sites in the past couple of years very interesting and I’m looking forward to how this progresses into full blown TV.

With both the BBC and Channel 4 starting their own internet TV services very soon here in england, it looks like competition should help all parties grow and expand very quickly.

From what I’ve heard so far, Joost seems to provide a very effective service, no matter what the spec of the users PC/connection and so on this front looks like things are going well. Haven’t really heard much on the content yet so I’d have to check that out, but hopefully I’ll now have that chance. Cheers in advance for the invite if I get one.

I think in this case, demand will inspire supply.

People are loathe to be tethered to their TV or even their TiVo. We download shows week after week through legal (iTunes) or illegal (BitTorrent) methods, and then still turn around and buy the complete DVD series.

We’re increasingly mobile and increasingly ‘connected’. We demand to be able to watch on our iPod and our phone, in line at the bank, on the train to work, and while at the dentist.

Major networks are listening and have made many shows available via their websites after initial broadcast. I, frankly, don’t see a way in which the majority of television content *won’t* be available online. It’s evolution.

I’ve subscribed via BlogLines after finding this blog only today. I’m genuinely happy to have found it and look forward to reading new entries.

I’ve been waiting for something like this for awhile now. Seems fitting that people will jump on the idea of TV on demand. Conventional television is getting more and more bloated with tripe, cheap and cheesy content.

i work night shift so on my nights off this will be wonderful. also i am so sick of 1/3 of viewing time being spent with commercials. this may make my fujitsu lifebook worth the money,(but i doubt it). can i have the invite to joost.
thanks for this wonderful site from a freeware junkie.

I think it is about time that cable tv was not the only chose for great viewing. I have two cumputers and one tv, so now I dont have to go out and buy extra tv’s for the rest of the house. I hav tried watching other streeming tv put the chanel selection was not that good. I cant waite to try Joost. I would really love to have an invite.

I am an American living in Oz and miss some of my favourite TV shows and am curious to see what’s on Joost! Can I watch PBS?

I think that we’re just at the beginning of something currently undefinable, and that we’re going to find out A. it’s totally useful and B. it may well indeed also bite us in the ass. So that means C. people should take back the content and copyright and get with the Creative Commons programme. Yo!

I think internet TV will finally enable on demand viewing…and unlimited choice…both being the next frontiers for user choice. I look forward to catching a lot of cool stuff on Joost and similar other services as they come onstream.

I’m interested in Internet TV with choice of both time and content. Joost seems to promise it all. I’d appreciate an invite and
