How to Edit, Merge, Split and Convert PDF Files

Many people consider all PDF files as unbreakable documents set in stone.  They couldn’t be more wrong.  

PDF Tools is a free piece of software that can make all kinds of modifications to a PDF file.  My top 10 favourite key features include the ability to:

  1. Merge two or more PDF files into a single PDF file.
  2. Extract, split, from a PDF file into a new file
  3. Reorder pages in a PDF file
  4. Encrypt or Decrypt PDF documents to prevent PDF files from being printed, copied, or changed.
  5. Rotate a PDF page by 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees
  6. Put multiple pages into one page to save paper and inks when printing hard copies, and add note lines for handouts 
  7. Add Headers and Footers to the PDF file, such as date, time, page numbers, or the title of the document, in the top or bottom margins of a document
  8. Add image or text watermarks
  9. Convert Images and Text to PDF 
  10. Save PDF pages into images

      If the document is protected, can we still make modifications on it? Is there any good PDF writer to recommend?

      @Wayne: You can only modify normal PDF files - protected PDFs are…. well… protected :)

      You could however try screencapping the protected PDF file then making the modifications on the picture, then reconverting back to PDF.

      I use PrimoPDF as an ad hoc personal print queue. Our printer at work is far away. So, using the PrimoPDF print driver, I simply append anything I want to print to a single PDF file. Then, when I’m going near the printer, I print that one file which now consists of everything I’ve wanted to print all day. Very handy.

      There is actually an easier way to print print-protected PDF. Copistar automatically captures all on-screen pages of a document and outputs them into a printable pdf file.
      It works for me anyway.

      I use a lot of pdf files for my crafts. One of the sites has begun including advertising in the pdf files, I don’t need that. How can I remove those pages?

      I use Infix PDF Editor from Iceni to edit PDF files. Works very well & has way more functionality than you would expect from a PDF Editor - just like using a design/layout/word processor program.

      Pretty sure it works for Word files, but if you’re having trouble doing it, try this other software…

      Is there any free utilitiy to split a big PDF file into multiple pages, giving a seperator or no. of pages. Like split every 5 page into a new PDF file.
