afaik, most of the free legal to download songs are from indie bands.
and once they become famous, they won’t put it for free anymore.

Another great place to download free, legal, new MP3s, playlists and mixes – mostly indie and alternative rock, pop, folk – is Indie Rock Cafe. The blog is really popular (just search Google for indie rock or anything with indie,rock,songs, etc. in it) and the site comes up near top – so must be popular. I love the choice of music – always been turned on to really great new music.
