It’s safe to say that Pandora and Last.fm has changed the face of Internet radio completely by doing such a good job of matching song playlists to users that it’s almost scary :)  Having said that, there’s always going to be a place for traditional Internet Radio stations because of their personality.  After all, many of us still enjoy tuning into a radio station every once in a while even though we’ve got our iPod loaded up.

The issue then lies in discovery, because of the sheer scale of Internet Radio where there are estimated to be at least 100,000 Internet Radio Stations streaming worldwide!  So how do you quickly pick out a station that you’ll probably like?  One Llama is a free service which allows you to discover Internet Radio Stations, by understanding what you like, then recommending relevant stations to you.

How One Llama understands your music tastes

By allowing you to search for artists or tracks, and showing you which stations have played them recently, it makes initial guesses as to what you may like.  If you choose to register for the service (you don’t have to – and registration is free anyway), One Llama will analyze the tracks you listen to online, and constantly refine its recommendations to continuously fine-tune its recommendations to you. 

How One Llama Makes its recommendations

Radio One Llama is constantly updating its database so that it "knows" the characteristics of each of over 30,000 stations, including their entire playlists.  It crawls Internet Radio stations and analyzes the data for patterns of similarity by artist, track and genre. They also have an accurate measure of what is being played when and where, and how often - so that users can search by location and popularity.  By matching what they know about the available music, and what you like – One Llama manages to come up with pretty good recommendations.

Overall, this is a pretty useful service – and always useful to have up your sleeves in case your workplace bans Pandora and Last.fm :) .

Too many people have a great idea but don’t make anything out of it.

Some are afraid of failure, some are afraid of the pressures of success, and some just want to tell people about their ideas, just for the sake of doing so. Here is a general step-by-step guide to taking an idea and turning it into a business as detailed by Chuck of Foldees.com - the greeting card company with a web 2.0 model.

Once you get an Idea…

1. Talk - Share your idea with your friends. Don’t worry about someone stealing your idea. Feedback will triumph over excessive paranoia. Take all feedback objectively, but consider them all.

2. Write it down - Putting things down on paper gets a lot of things out of your head and onto an initial plan. Don’t worry about structure, all the analysis just yet. Put down everything that comes to your head first. Getting this out of the way paves a much easier path to sit down in the future and do up a proper business plan.

3. Assemble a team - Pick your people based on motivation, communication, and skills. The lack of any one of these attributes will result in a higher likelihood of your team not reaching its full potential and morale being affected adversely. Having an especially cohesive team is essential, as a start-up will take a much longer time to reach a point of big rewards.

5. Find a deadline - Make your own deadlines and set your own lofty targets. Break things down into small tasks each which its own deadline so that you at least make baby steps towards the final goal. Failure of this will likely result in procrastination and unnecessary slowdown of the project

6. Manage the team – Be decisive. Insist on reasonable commitments on team members, and don’t be afraid to seek out new blood if they don’t reach expected levels of commitment.

7. Rinse and repeat steps 5 and 6 until you get into business - Constantly seek out new goals to meet, and manage your team based on those goals on deadlines.

Simplistic as it sounds, these are practical steps that will move you in the right direction in a timely manner.

2. How to aggregate results from several social networks

Wink.com is a social media profile aggregator and people search tool. It has now the ability to unite and crawl profiles from most popular social networking sites: MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The process looks like this: a person signs up with Wink, adds links to his profiles at any (or all) supported social media sites and thus gets into the search index.

3. How to search people by name using people search engines

Zoominfo.com focuses on business related information: it will look for the person as an employee of various companies. It has a fairly large database and you most likely to find relevant business related information on the person you are interested in.

Gadget Advisor is a new tech blog which is trying to build a sold niche for itself focusing on the product releases and news items that are the most significant, hoping to create a best of the best resource for computer hardware, software, gadgets, and tech news.  That way, it hopes to cut through the chaff for its visitors to make a better reading experience for their readers. 

So you get a feel for what their site is about, you should check these posts out:

What’s good

Some of the articles like the ‘Firefox recommendations’ post listed above, provide some useful tips which can really come in handy.  As for the layout, it’s pleasing to the eye, and it’s quite easy to navigate.

What could be improved

Too much of the site is general tech news.  My take is that if you’re going to start a tech news site, make sure you either have a ton of resources behind you, or you have a truly deep niche, so deep that mainstream tech sites won’t cover those subjects.   The reason behind this is that it’s near impossible to outdo mainstream news sites like Techcrunch or Endagdget in terms of coming up with the latest and greatest tech news.  The value of ‘news’, is largely time driven, and if you’re one step behind - old (even slightly older) news being blogged has lost a lot of value.

GadgetAdvisor has some great posts,  so if anything I would advise them to concentrate on building up content like that which is much less time-sensitive. 

All in all, it’s a useful site, do check it out - but I definitely feel it can be improved.

A lot of the great pics you see on this blog actually come from Flickr, and there are usually several steps involved in the process of actually getting the picture up on the site.  This is how I usually do it:

  1. First, I’ll use FlickrStorm, which is my preferred search engine to find the picture I want
  2. Then I’ll click-through to the actual photo on Flickr, save the image, and get the image attribution details (yes I know- I forget this step sometimes)
  3. Then insert it on my site, and create a link with the attribution details

iFlickr is a free Wordpress plugin that streamlines this process nicely.  Brought to you by the folks at Photopreneur, in a nutshell - it allows you to easily find free creative commons images on flickr directly from the Wordpress ‘write post’ section itself and insert them into your blog post while automatically putting the attribution link underneath.  No going to multiple sites and performing multiple tasks. 

Other features include:

  • Customizable Attribution Text
  • Custom CSS class on Attribution & Image
  • Downloads the image to your server
  • Custom naming of image filename and alt text

There are a few limitations to this plugin so be aware of them before you download it.  If your hosting does not support direct image uploads from Wordpress ‘write post’ section, it will not work.  Also, a little more documentation would have gone a long way as I was feeling a bit lost during the setup  (After the setup - it was a breeze to use).

In need of a good sound effect?  FindSounds is a free service that allows you to… well… find sounds :)

What it does is it crawls the web and indexes sound files, then as a user you can filter by file format, quality, and file size. 

The result is a search engine with probably the largest collection of sound effects you could possibly imagine, all of which can be previewed and downloaded easily.

No speech or music here though,  but it’s perfect for Windows sound themes, or phone message/ring tones (If your phones can use WAV files as ring-tones).

When it comes to organizing pictures, I only ever use Google’s Picasa photo organizer. 

Now, one of my favorite features from Picasa is something called ‘I’m feeling lucky’ where it enhances dark and bright colors in a photo and adjusts both color and contrast to optimal levels in one click.  No fiddling around - just instant editing. 

ImproveYourImages.com is a great piece of free web technology which allows you to get access that feature without having to install anything.

You just upload your image…

  • …and it automatically adjusts the color saturation, temperature and lighting of your photo
  • …and lines it up side by side with the original for a quick comparison.
  • …where you can download your new and improved picture on the spot!

Perfect for quick edits - where you don’t have or want to fire up Picasa to make simple tweaks.

Previously only available as part of Google Earth, you are now free to browse through outer space directly from your browser with Google Sky! 

Google Sky includes a number of different ways to explore the universe.  Select the thumbnail images at the bottom of the display to bring up the planets, the constellations, highlights from the Hubble Space Telescope, famous stars, galaxies and nebulae.  Other features available through Google Sky include:

  • Infrared - An infrared view of the sky from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). Change the transparency of this layer by moving the slide bar to blend the optical and infrared.
  • Microwave - A view of the microwave sky from NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), which shows the universe as it was 380,000 years after the big bang.
  • Historical - The sky as drawn by Giovanni Maria Cassini (printed in 1792) showing the constellations in their classical form from the collections of David Rumsey

Two things I really like about this free service is that it offers

  1. Hi-res photos of some of the most best-looking galaxies out there so you can take good close-up views
  2. Quick one-click access to important and beautiful astronomical entities, because if you’re an astronomy newbie like me - you probably wouldn’t know where to start looking
  3. A search box, so you can jump directly to your outer space location of choice

Anyhow, looks like Google is indexing on all fronts… First the web, then the earth, the moon, planet mars….and now the rest of the known universe :)

Keeping in constant contact with your friends online has never been easier.  We’ve now got a growing list of instant messaging, email, and online social networks that help us stay in touch. 

The trouble is, the more points of contact we have, the more time it takes to manage our online presence.

digsby is a free ambitious service which allows you to track everything in one place.  I’ve now got my Facebook, Gmail, and MSN running off digsby and I get updates from all sources without having to visit individual sites.  Think of it as RSS feeds for your online presence.

There are too many features to get into detail on this post, but here are some of my favorites:

  • One combined buddy list for all your AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, and Jabber Accounts.
  • Manage multiple conversations with tabbed conversation windows. You can drag tabs out into their own windows for important conversations.
  • Gives you a snapshot of your unread messages with just one click
  • Perform actions such as "Mark as Read" or "Report Spam" , and send email right from digsby
  • Receive alerts of events such as new friend requests, messages, group invites, newsfeed etc. from Facebook
  • Complete synchronization between computers and installations.
  • You can place a widget on your blog, website, or social network profile so you can chat with visitors right from digsby.
  • Manage multiple simultaneous file transfers from one simple transfer manager

and the list of features goes on and on… (as I said - it’s an ambitious project)

On my wish-list is Twitter integration as well as a web based interface as well.  Hope this is in development down the road :)  In any case it’s still a fabulous way to centralize all my online communication!
