Blog Action Day 2008 Poverty from Blog Action Day on Vimeo.
Today is Blog Action Day. More than 8,000 blogs around the world have banded together to talk about one cause:
Poverty.
Consider this.
- One third of deaths - some 18 million people a year or 50,000 per day - are due to poverty-related causes
- Every year nearly 11 million children living in poverty die before their fifth birthday
- 800 million people go to bed hungry every night
- There are over 100 million street children worldwide
- Source: Wikipedia
Today, you can make a difference on this blog.
All you have to do is leave a comment telling us about any charity you like which helps the poor. Not only will this help expose other readers to new avenues of tackling poverty, but I will make a donation based on the number of comments on this post.
- 0-10 comments : Friedbeef’s Tech will donate USD 10
- USD 10 gift will feed one person in need for a month. For the hungry, every day is about finding enough food to simply survive. This prevents these individuals from pursuing any other opportunities for self-sufficiency.
- 11-20 comments :Friedbeef’s Tech will donate USD 20
- USD 20 will provide 10 families with enough seeds to begin household farming activities throughout the world. This ensures that families have food security during the off-season by allowing them to grow fruits and vegetables that they can both consume and sell for additional income
- >21 comments : Friedbeef’s Tech will donate 50 USD
- 50 USD will provide an in-school breakfast to 10 hungry children for nine months and help the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) fight hunger in the most impoverished regions of Mauritania.
I will close this donation drive on 22nd Oct 2008, but don’t let that stop you from commenting even after it closes.
ps. If you’re interested, check out our charity page to see our other efforts.

Great idea!

This is lovely. I think the Salvation Army do a fantastic job of helping the poor. I would rather give things to them that I no longer need, instead of selling them, because I have been in need before myself!

Good luck!

Excellent way to donate James, Hope you get as much support as you need.
October 15th, 2008 at 10:04 am
James, can I drop several comments? :P
October 15th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Thanks everyone for their encouraging words thus far
@Kay: Yes - but please talk about several charities if you’re planning to drop several comments :) More than plain ol’ commenting - this is a way to expose other readers to new avenues of tackling poverty.

I’m a fan of Kiva–which is where I saw the link to your site. I also sponsor a child through Children International. I prefer Kiva, where I know all of the money goes to the loan, but it is rewarding to watch “my child” grow up across the world, even though I know that some of my money goes to Children International’s MANY ad campaigns and appeals for more donations.
This is a great idea! I’ll check back to see where others are donating!

Hey James!
I love your blog, and I’ve been a subscriber for quite a while. Your donation-comment challenge is a terrific idea. I’ll see if I can’t help scare up a few more comments to get your total over 20.
All the best! –Paul

In my previous comment, I neglected to mention the favourite charity that comes to my mind. I like making donations of real food items to our local food bank. This is one way of helping alleviate a little of the very real poverty in my own community. We have a growing number of homeless people in our town, and the majority of them are women!
October 19th, 2008 at 11:33 am
We had a student blogging competition also writing about BAD 2008. Personally I have sponsored a child through World Vision ever since I received my first pay cheque over 30 years ago.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Great idea - I hope you get dozens of comments! We have a link on our blog to http://www.freerice.com but my favorite charity for giving money too, as opposed to time, would be either the Red Cross or Salvation Army. I think both do a great job not only in times of disaster but also on an everyday basis.

Hey James, Kiva is cool and great to learn it from your blog :)

What is ippimail?
Ippimail is a FREE email service. We provide you with an email address and a means to read and write your email over the internet.
I already have an email address. Why would I switch to an ippimail address?
Because we raise money for the charities you care about and make it easy to change your email address. You can forward email sent to your ippimail address to any other email address or your mail can be collected from another address and placed in your ippimail inbox. Easy!
If the service is free, where does your income come from?
Every time you read an email on the ippimail site, you will see a conventional banner advert, just like the ones you see on most websites. The sale of these adverts is where our income comes from.
What proportion of income is going to charities?
45% of our income will go to charities and an additional 10% will go to the Open Source programming community.
