Today is Blog Action Day. More than 8,000 blogs around the world have banded together to talk about one cause:
Poverty.
Consider this.
- One third of deaths – some 18 million people a year or 50,000 per day – are due to poverty-related causes
- Every year nearly 11 million children living in poverty die before their fifth birthday
- 800 million people go to bed hungry every night
- There are over 100 million street children worldwide

Today, you can make a difference on this blog.
All you have to do is leave a comment telling us about any charity you like which helps the poor. Not only will this help expose other readers to new avenues of tackling poverty, but I will make a donation based on the number of comments on this post.
- 0-10 comments : Friedbeef’s Tech will donate USD 10
- USD 10 gift will feed one person in need for a month. For the hungry, every day is about finding enough food to simply survive. This prevents these individuals from pursuing any other opportunities for self-sufficiency.
- 11-20 comments :Friedbeef’s Tech will donate USD 20
- USD 20 will provide 10 families with enough seeds to begin household farming activities throughout the world. This ensures that families have food security during the off-season by allowing them to grow fruits and vegetables that they can both consume and sell for additional income
- >21 comments : Friedbeef’s Tech will donate 50 USD
- 50 USD will provide an in-school breakfast to 10 hungry children for nine months and help the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) fight hunger in the most impoverished regions of Mauritania.

This is lovely. I think the Salvation Army do a fantastic job of helping the poor. I would rather give things to them that I no longer need, instead of selling them, because I have been in need before myself!

@Kay: Yes – but please talk about several charities if you’re planning to drop several comments :) More than plain ol’ commenting – this is a way to expose other readers to new avenues of tackling poverty.
I’m a fan of Kiva–which is where I saw the link to your site. I also sponsor a child through Children International. I prefer Kiva, where I know all of the money goes to the loan, but it is rewarding to watch “my child” grow up across the world, even though I know that some of my money goes to Children International’s MANY ad campaigns and appeals for more donations.

In my previous comment, I neglected to mention the favourite charity that comes to my mind. I like making donations of real food items to our local food bank. This is one way of helping alleviate a little of the very real poverty in my own community. We have a growing number of homeless people in our town, and the majority of them are women!
We had a student blogging competition also writing about BAD 2008. Personally I have sponsored a child through World Vision ever since I received my first pay cheque over 30 years ago.
Great idea – I hope you get dozens of comments! I think both do a great job not only in times of disaster but also on an everyday basis.

The Salvation Army here in Lincoln,Nebraska,DOES not help the poor people.If your lights or gas or rent is over due,the only way they help you is if you have mental or physical health problem.If you are fired,layed off or unemployeed then you are totally out of luck!!!!! they will tell you to else where,and the else where(S) will tell you the same “We can’t help you if we helped you once already.” these agencies only help one time,in a life time.they Lie and say that they do help,when what they really mean is,they pick who they will help!!!
