My office just started blocking MSN messenger recently, so I’m currently using web-based Meebo as a work around. It’s simple, very functional, and of course — free!
Features which I love include:
- Integration of MSN, Yahoo, Gtalk, ICQ, AIM services all in one — all with a single sign on for ease of use. It’s something like Trillian or Gaim… but based completely online.
- Option to keeps logs of conversations (stored online)
- Supports offline messaging where available on original service
- Ability to participate in group chats
From what I’ve seen so far, Meebo seems to have a solid team behind it, and new features seem to roll out on a regular basis, so it seems to me like the perfect MSN Messenger replacement.

Here’s a useful tip about Meebo’s group chat sent to me by email…
“If a meebo user initiates a group chat, those invited can read everything the inviter writes, but can’t read each other’s messages.
It will only work properly if it is yahoo user that initiate the group chat. That was 2 weeks ago. Not sure if that bug was fixed now…”

Yo there! yes, this is a cool alternative! Less distractive than msn too…btw, is icq dead? No one seems to be on my icq which i’d just signed in after…5 years? lol!

I still have some old friends on ICQ, which I lost once I moved over to MSN… Handy for keeping in touch with them — if only to ask for their MSN ID!

even if your work blocks meebo, you can get around it by using the meebo repeater

Meebo is probably a most popular web messenger in the schools and colleges for USA/Canada, but because it’s so popular it gets blocked unlike any other. There are many other web messengers, but the closest for meebo fans is ILoveIM.com web messenger (http://www.iloveim.com). It comes with some ads on a screen which is a little worse then meebo, but it’s a very stable and solid application being around for like 4-5 years.
